World's first Top 100 ranking of VoIP services

Including the world's first Top 100 ranking of VoIP services

Over the past five years it has become increasingly difficult to keep an overview of all the worldwide operating VoIP services or Broadband phone providers. New VoIP / Broadband phone VoIP services are launching almost on a weekly basis and it has become almost impossible to compare PC to Phone and Broadband Phone service providers without weeks and weeks of time consuming research. Each VoIP provider proclaims to have the best service and the cheapest local, long distance or international VoIP phone rates, but the differences are still substantial (up to 1000%), although in most cases the VoIP services are cheaper than most traditional telephone companies (PSTN). Choosing the right Voice over IP service for your specific need and calling pattern, especially if you make regular international calls can save you a small fortune every month.

To find and compare VoIP services on the Internet is already a mission on its own. A few of the larger, more established VoIP services (such as the Broadband phone companies like Intalk, Jive, or ITP ) are easy to find on hundreds of Internet sites. With their extensive marketing budgets and daily bombardment of press releases, they have established a market dominance in a short period of time. There are however hundreds of smaller and newer Voice over IP services with the same customer service and quality levels, even cheaper VoIP rates and monthly packages with unlimited VoIP calls.

Over the past two years a new group of VoIP service providers have been making their mark in the VoIP market. These providers are offering free VoIP calls to a wide range of destinations and are capturing a significant market share. Being the first VoIP service to offer these free calls, VoIP Buster is the best known, but every few months sister companies are launched to keep the momentum up, but all offer basically the same services. Some of the sister companies are VoipStunt, VoIPCheap, Netappel, SIP Discount, SparVoIP, Internetcalls, VoipDiscount and a few others - the larger more established Broadband phone services should take note.

We, at MyVoipProvider.com, have identified over 1400 international VoIP services (January 2008) for the residential and SOHO (small business) market and in due course each and every Broadband or Internet phone service will be included in our extensive VoIP rates database.

PC to phone services - New

PC-to-Phone

Today you can call from your PC to a traditional phone for free, and you also can get a free number where others can call you from a phone. Your PC connection will be the only limiting factor, since the service provider will use high quality connections on the other end. You can find at least twenty top-notch PC to phone services, with Skype, ICQPhone, and BlasterPhone among them.
What You’ll Need

When you use your PC to call a phone, you’ll need to download software that enables you to make a phone call from you PC to a phone. You’ll also need a headset or speakers and a microphone. And, although you’ll be connecting to a phone service, it would help to have your computer connected to high-speed cable or DSL. You can connect with a dial-up connection, but don’t expect quality audio on either end. The larger and faster your connection, the better the flow of audio on both ends.
Features to Look For

In many cases, you can make calls to the U.S. if you live outside the U.S. While most software that enables PC to phone calling provides connections to phones within the U.S., you might look for a company that offers international calls you’re your computer. Be aware that the international calls made not be made for free.

Some software only works with Windows, so be aware about whether you can use that software with your current computer setup. With that said, the software should offer services such as fax, an answer phone, voicemail, file transfer and more.

Internet Phone Calls - Free

Update: Things have changed a bit since this article was written in the 1990's. The dot com bubble burst and for a number of years there was no free PC to phone calling. However, now, not only can you call regular phones for free, you can also get a free number for incoming calls. Read this article about combining Skype and StanaPhone for one excellent and totally free phone service. The original article from the 90's follows:

Free calling from one PC to another on the Internet has been around for quite some time, but now you can make calls to standard telephones for free.

PC to PC calling has its share of drawbacks. The person you are calling not only needs to be online they need to be running the same Internet phone software you are. The sound quality of your call is dependent on your connection speed and the other person's connection speed. If the connection is slow or there is a lot of traffic at just one end it may be impossible to hold a conversation.

On the other hand when you use services that allow you to initiate your call from your PC but call standard telephones you are the only one that needs a special setup. Typically your connection will be the only limiting factor since the service provider will be using high speed connections at their end.

I'm not saying that you will always have high quality audio, but your chances are better, particularly if you have a cable or DSL connection or if your dialup ISP has plenty of capacity and a good connection to the Internet itself.
